NJ Salary Calculator Methodology

Tax year: 2026Tax data reviewed: 2026-10-08Methodology reviewed: 2026-10-08

Calculation scope

Models a typical New Jersey resident W-2 employee for tax year 2026. Estimates annual and per-period net pay from gross wages using published federal and New Jersey rules. Not a substitute for employer payroll or professional tax advice.

Gross income

Annual mode uses entered gross wages. Hourly mode: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. Bonuses, overtime rules, and irregular pay are not modeled separately.

Federal income tax

Taxable income = gross wages minus the 2026 federal standard deduction for the selected filing status. Tax is computed marginally across IRS brackets from Revenue Procedure 2025-32. Itemized deductions and credits are not included.

New Jersey income tax

NJ taxable income = gross wages minus personal exemption amounts ($1,000 single/MFS/HOH taxpayer; $2,000 MFJ). Tax uses Table A (single, MFS) or Table B (MFJ, HOH) schedules from the Division of Taxation. Dependent exemptions and property tax deductions are not included.

Social Security

Employee share at 6.2% on wages up to the 2026 wage base from SSA publications.

Medicare

Employee Medicare at 1.45% on all covered wages. Additional Medicare at 0.9% on wages above the threshold for the selected filing status.

NJ employee payroll contributions

UI and WF/SWF use the $44,800 calendar-year wage base. TDI and FLI use the $171,100 employee wage base. Each rate applies only to wages within its cap (see parameter table).

Per-period take-home = annual net ÷ periods. Rounding may cause small differences versus multiplying a single paycheck by periods.

Filing status assumptions

Federal brackets, standard deduction, and Additional Medicare threshold follow the filing status you select. New Jersey table selection follows the same status mapping (Table A vs Table B).

Excluded deductions and credits

  • Itemized federal or NJ deductions
  • Most tax credits
  • Pre-tax 401(k), HSA, FSA, health premiums
  • 1099 / self-employment income
  • Multi-state wage allocation
  • Supplemental wage withholding rules

Rounding and result calculation

Internal math uses full precision. Displayed dollars round to cents or whole dollars where noted. Take-home = gross minus federal tax, NJ tax, FICA, and NJ employee payroll totals.

Why we publish the methodology

Tax and payroll rules change. Outputs depend on assumptions. Users should be able to see what is included, what is excluded, and which government documents support each input. Publishing methodology makes errors easier to spot and report.
